June 2026: A Month of Disappointing K-Pop Title Tracks
As a long-time K-pop enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating the summer hits of 2026. However, the month of June turned out to be a bit of a letdown, with many of the title tracks falling short of the high standards set by previous years. While the first half of the month was promising, with some exciting releases, the second half seemed to fizzle out, leaving me wondering if the World Cup had something to do with the lull in new music.
One thing that immediately stands out is the dominance of SM Entertainment in June. Their groups, SHINee, RIIZE, and Hearts2Hearts, all released mini albums that I found quite enjoyable. However, I can't help but wonder if their success is due more to their agency status than the quality of their music. In fact, if certain songs had received music videos, my top three picks for June would look very different, with TWS's 'Dream With Us' and RIIZE's 'Soar' easily taking the top spots.
Unfortunately, the rules are the rules, and to be eligible for my top three picks, a song must have a music video and/or be widely promoted. This left me with an easy choice for number one, but less extraordinary tracks for the runners-up. June has historically been a strong month for title tracks, but this year's releases didn't live up to the hype.
I'd say this was the weakest June since 2022, even if it kicked off with an instant classic hit at the top of the month. Too many songs relied on some of the year's worst trends, including truly awful work from LE SSERAFIM+ILLIT+Katseye, VVS, ATEEZ, Evan, and even AHOF. These songs, along with a veritable fleet of 6 and 7-rated releases, dragged down June's rating. I can't remember ever writing as many harsh reviews as I have this year, and a good handful of those came from the past few weeks.
Personally, I think the lack of strong title tracks in June is a reflection of the industry's current state. With the World Cup in full swing, many artists are choosing to release their music earlier in the month, leaving a barren few weeks in July. I hope that changes soon, because 2026 is on track to be one of the industry's most underwhelming years. AHOF have a redemption arc on their hands, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pull it off. There are a couple of very nugu debuts that could be good as well, but probably won't be. A promised summer comeback from fromis_9 should also be worth looking forward to.
